From keto to the paleo diet, there’s no shortage of advice on which types of foods are the best. But good nutrition isn’t just about eating well so you can look better (even though that’s a benefit too). Proper nutrition helps protect your body against many chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and even some types of cancer.

But how do you know which foods are truly the best for staying healthy? The Boston Celtics’ Brian Scalabrine speaks with Novalette, a health and wellness coach at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, in this short video:

Balance your plate

Meals should contain a mix of protein, complex carbohydrates and vegetables. Normally, your protein choice, like chicken, should be about the size of the palm of your hand. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, you can still get the protein you need with foods like beans and tofu.

Double up veggies

Most vegetables are low in calories and fat, and they’re generally great sources of many important nutrients. Extra veggies on your plate can help you feel satisfied and get more fiber in your diet.

Choose complex carbs

Complex carbohydrates, such as those found in whole grains, starchy vegetables, and legumes, take more time to break down inside your body. This provides more energy over a longer period of time.

Wait 20 minutes

Did you know that your stomach takes about 20 minutes to register when you’re full? If you’re thinking about seconds, try waiting a while to see if you’re still truly hungry.

Hydration, hydration, hydration

It’s one thing all experts can agree on — you should drink water every day. But your hydration needs may be different from someone else’s, especially if you’re active. The old adage “drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day” is a reasonable place to start.
